5 Reasons We’re All Over The Indie Film Fest

La Phoenikera.com was created to elevate the contributions of Latinxs and other people of color to our city’s culture scene, as well as to shed light on the immense talent of Phoenikerxs. We will always support independent projects because they usually involve a bunch of people coming together and putting their blood, sweat and tears on the line for something they care about. This weekend we’re heading to The Indie Film Fest and here are five reasons why we’re pretty psyched about it.

Uno: 30 independent short and feature films!

The two-day festival will showcase four sessions with more than 15 short films as well as four feature films. These include Libertad Beirut; You Racist, Sexist Bigot, documentary produced and directed by Phoenikerxs Pita Juarez and Matty Steinkamp; Rosalie; and Table Manners. Visit their web site to see the full schedule.

Dos: Panels with boss ass peeps

One of the coolest things about a film festival is the opportunity to hear from filmmakers. We’re really looking forward to attending The Indie Film Fest’s two panels:

Women in Filmmaking, featuring a diverse group of boss ass bitches.

LGBTQ Filmmaking, right after the premier of Libertad Beirut, showing February 1 at 6 p.m..

Tres: The festival is organized by Phoenikerxs!

Pita Juarez and Matty Steinkamp are two local content creators and they co-directed the organization of The Indie Film Fest. They lead a team of other talented Phoenikerxs to put this festival together: Kash Cole, lead singer of The Stakes, Tracy Perkins from vegan store Strawberry Hedgehog and singer/writer Haley Green. The organizers partnered up with Phoenikera staples Crescent Ballroom, The Filmbar and Paz Taquería y Cantina to host the event. La Phoenikera represent!

Cuatro: AFTER PARTY!

Here at LaPhoenikera.com we love parties. It’s where you get to meet people raw…where projects often start, deals are closed and moments “for the books” happen.

The Indie Film Fest’s after party will go down at Crescent Ballroom starting at 9 p.m. with live performances by The Hourglass Cats, who will also premier their music video for the song “Está Bien,” The Stakes and Santa Pachita all the way from La Tusa (Tucson).

Cinco: Proceeds will go to a good cause

Whatever is raised by the festival will benefit Living United for Change in Arizona (LUCHA), a grassroots organization behind key changes in Arizona. Remember the minimum wage increase? Yeah, they made it happen.

Last year, LUCHA premiered a short documentary about their work. Photo from their film Tu Lucha Es Nuestra Lucha.
