5 Things to Know About Friendly House’s Fiesta de las Américas

We are very excited because Friendly House is hosting a cultural festival this weekend that is going to expose Phoenikerxs to food, entertainment, and traditions from Latin America in a way that is authentic.

We love events like the Flying Burrito, Tacolandia, and the Chile Pepper Festival but sometimes we can’t help to think “man, they’re taking so many things that belong to our culture and running with them!” Finally a Latinx themed event is being produced by a Latinx lead organization.

For this reason, we want you to check it out, support, have a blast and learn a thing or two about different Latin American countries. Here are five things you need to know about the festival.

¡UNO! It’s cheap AF! It’s only five bucks to get in, and kids under 12 get in for free. Hello? Less than a movie ticket!

¡DOS! There will be Mexican food and chupe (duh, La Phoenikera is full of MexiCans), and grub from Perú, Colombia, Chile, Puerto Rico and other countries.

¡TRES! The entertainment line-up includes:

Phoenix Mariachi Juvenil de mi Tierra and Ballet Folklórico Esperanza. Can you guess where this is from?

Guitarras Latinas with music from all over Latin America, from Brazil to Cuba to Mexico and Venezuela.

Josie Perez’s All Stars Band, a Latin Jazz ensemble.

Paqo Colorado, a Brazilian dance troupe.

921 Band, bringing salsa, merengue, and cumbia from different parts of Latin America like Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, and Colombia.

Capoeira Arizona, a group that practices Afro-Brazilian martial arts combining dance, acrobatics and music.

Chicha Dust, an awesome band out of Tucson that plays psychedelic chicha and cumbia.

¡CUATRO! There will be unique entertainment for the little ones and youngsters including bilingual improv by Rising Youth Teatre, soccer and other health activities with Core Fitness and mask making with Cultural Coalition.

¡CINCO! Fiesta de las Américas is a fundraiser for Friendly House, an organization that provides education and family services to underserved communities in La Phoenikera and the metro area.
