Having a Bolivian mom (Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 27th there), who lives in Mexico (there it’s observed on the 10th), and me living on this side, generates a lil’ anxiety during these days. Especially because IDKWTF (that w stands for when) I should thank and congratulate all the awesome moms I know.

In many Latin American countries this celebration takes place during the month of May: Colombia, Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, second Sunday in May; the 10th for El Salvador, Mexico and Guatemala, and the 15th in Paraguay and Uruguay. The last Sunday in May is momma’s day in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and for Nicaragua it’s on the 30th. In Costa Rica it’s not until August, October in Argentina and December in Panama.

Now that we’ve clear that up (or added more confusion to the mix), we can get back to the list we now suggest. You can check out these movies from the Phoenix Public Library and its branches sparkled all over La Phoenikera. Inside these stories, I found traces of all the strong women I grew up with (I’m lucky I’m still surrounded by powerful dudettes), glimpses of their personalities, their tenacity or their impenitence; some similar situations, an angle, a parallel. I discovered and purged many things thanks to some of these flicks, even the creepy ones.

You’ll notice we didn’t include Juno (2008), Stepmom (1998), Terms of Endearment (1983), Steel Magnolias (1989), Not Without My Daughter (1991) and other obvious ones; and we couldn’t find a copy of two of my faves, My Stepmom is An Alien (1988) and My Mom’s A Werewolf (1989), at the library. Sux for you!
